What Makes Kilim Rugs Different?

At Natural Rug Co., we're proud to offer a wide array of kilim area rugs in sustainable, natural wool, jute, and cotton in a plethora of beautiful patterns and colors. Ours are primarily handmade by artisans in India, but there is much more to know about these superior quality, high-style and high-function area rugs.

Here's a quick overview:

Origins

Kilims date back to the 5th century A.D. They were traditionally produced in regions that were formally known as the Persian Empire, such as Iran, the Balkans and Turkic countries.

Uses

While in the Western world, we primarily use kilims as floor coverings or wall hangings, traditionally they were used more practically as saddles, blankets or prayer mats, and still are today.

Fabrication

Kilim rugs are pure works of art, carefully hand-woven using a tight tapestry weave, and thus each is one-of-a-kind. Because they are flat-woven, kilims are pile-less (flatweave), do not shed, and look similar on top and bottom.

Materials

Kilims were traditionally produced from 100% wool, but today bold, geometric patterns are also flatwoven to product jute and cotton kilims as well.

Wear

Kilims are extremely durable, as well as water- and stain-resistant.

Care

Despite their extreme durability, most kilims (and especially wool ones), must be treated very carefully. Vacuuming is not recommended, however, if you do opt to vacuum a kilim rug, it is imperative to use only a low suction setting (or small hand-vac) and to never use a beater or revolving brush.
