Where in the World Do You Put an Area Rug in a Room?

When it comes to choosing the fiber, fabrication, shape, and pattern of your natural area rug, there are plentiful options. When it comes to choosing an area rug for your particular space, however, there are standard guidelines to keep in mind when it comes to selecting size and placement.

A caveat to begin. Don't be fooled by our room scene photos that often have furniture placed off of rugs completely. That's designed to better showcase rug details, but now how area rugs should be used in your home. Here are a few general tips to follow.

In a Living Room or Seating Area

In a living room, family room or other seating area, be sure to use an area rug large enough so you can place at least the front legs of all furniture on it. If there's a sofa in your seating arrangement, the rug should be six to eight inches wider than it on each side.

In a Dining Area

It's common to see an area rug under a dining room table, but one can be used in a kitchen eating area, as well. When used under a kitchen or dining room table, your area rug should be large enough to go under chairs when they're pulled out.

In a Bedroom

There are several options for using an area rug in a bedroom.

You can place a rug in a seating or reading area using the tips above. You can also place an area rug  horizontally at the foot of the bed.

To anchor your bed visually and to have a soft landing place for your feet when turning in or getting up, you can also place the rug completely under the bed. When doing this, choose a rug large enough so there is some showing at either all four sides or on either side and at the foot of the bed.

Generally, choose a 5'x 8' rug for under a twin bed, 6' x 9' for a full, 8' x 10' for a queen, and 9' x 12' for a standard king.

Yet another stylish option is to place your are rug so that it extends horizontally under the bottom two-thirds of the bed.
